MEMBERS NEWS

Knitter and spinner Helen Neale has two pieces of work with the Art Through Textiles Group at the Knitting and Stitching Show at Harrogate, (22nd – 25th Nov.) and will be at the show on Thursday 22nd November on the Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Stand.

Roger Lee (metal Sculpture), Soo Durham (ceramics) and Lorraine Hogg
(Glass) are exhibiting in “Earth, Wind & Fire” at 618 Gallery in Woodhall Spa – Preview is at 7.30pm on Friday 23rd November, and the show runs for 2 weeks.

Painter Allison Payne currently has new work on display in the Christmas Exhibition at Whisby Natural World Centre.

Calligrapher Rosi Baxter has recently completed scripting and updating work on the Lincoln Minster Memorial Book – this is now on permanent display in the nave of the Cathedral.

And finally, four of us will once more be in residence in our studios for the final weekend of ART ON THE MAP, 11am – 4pm Saturday and Sunday 1st & 2nd December.

Although not exactly familiar breeds yet, Highland Cowheadpot and Swaledale Headpot do perch credibly amongst the more recognisable species tethered in the Upper Gallery for the time being.

Our new collection of original paintings and ceramics brings a little Animal Magic to Harding House in the form of drooling cattle, pecking hens, a roaring tiger, plus assorted livestock and wild beasts garnered from far and wide.

Predominantly paintings, prints, ceramics and functional tableware, this amazing gathering of thankfully tamed and remarkably well behaved creatures will be on display until November 30th.

"About Lincoln"

ABOUT Lincoln is our current exhibition in the Upper Gallery, highlighting the diversity and creative talent to be found within the city and county.

Capturing the essence of Lincolnshire is a great oppportunity to explore the rich texture of the area, and the work on display demonstrates a wonderfully varied approach to the subject.

Tucked away in one of the display cabinets is a collection of unusual silver jewellery by Andrew Poole from Horncastle, based on the format of church stained glass windows, and reflecting the jewel like hues found in many a county church.

Helen Webber from Surfleet has created a wonderful image of sheep sampling the delights of a county staple, the brussel sprout, and there are vibrant pastel landscapes by Sleaford artist Sheila Parkinson.
From just up around the corner, the exhibition showcases a series of images by Charles Twigg, focusing on interiors and carvings.

Last month we said a fond farewell (but see you anon!) to Gail Belinda Lee, a much loved member of HHG for over 7 years , not only for the streamlined Sale or Return system she thankfully instigated back then, but for her constant hard work, and commitment in labeling and pricing anything (or anyone ) found in the same spot for more than 5 minutes....

Her cheery disposition and many talents will be facing a new and in it's own way creative challenge, as revealed in her own words...

" I am very sad to leave HHG, whilst at the same time looking forward to my new adventure, motherhood.

It has been an interesting 7 1/2 years, I've experienced alot in helping to run a Co-operative. It has been a greatly supporting environment to have been part of.

If I do find myself twiddling my thumbs I shall be back!I'm sure Bridget will be pleased to hear this!"

However, we are really delighted to welcome a new artist into the group,

KEVIN WALLHEAD.
Kevin joined Harding House co-operative in June this year. He is a well established local glass artist with 10 years experience producing and supplying galleries in the East Midlands and further afield. He gained his first class honours degree De Montfort University, Lincoln studying Historic and Contemporary Decorative Craft.

Within the co-operative Kevin has taken on the role of display management in the Downstairs Gallery and regularly changes the work, keeping the shop refreshed and lively for both clients and artists alike. He enjoys meeting visitors and having that direct feedback that being part of the co-operative allows, something many artists seldom get.

Alongside his regular galleries Kevin is currently exhibiting in Brighton at the Alexander Gallery until September 8th, The Haven at Boston will be exhibiting a collection of work titled ‘Magnifying Glass’ which runs from September 1st to November 10th, and in the run up to Christmas Kevin will be participating in the Christmas Art Market at Thoresby Hall on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of November alongside other members of The Harding House Gallery.

Lincolnshire Open Studios

Four Harding House Gallery artists will be inviting the public into their individual workspaces during ART ON THE MAP Open Studios in October and December...

This is an excellent opportunity for the public to satisfy their curiosity and view the creative process in action, where and how it all happens, find out more about techniques, and come and have a chat amidst the chaos in which some of us manage to work!
Well, perhaps not all of us...

Helen Neale is exhibiting till September 9th with Dodeka Designers
"Humbug " Exhibition at Pickford House, Derby. She has created scarves and hats inspired by the colours and shapes of boiled sweeets.

Helen is also a member of of the Sheffield group ART THROUGH TEXTILES and will be exhibiting with the group at the Knitting and Stitching Show at Birmingham and Harrogate. The theme is Made in Sheffield, and Helen has created two exciting wall pieces inspired by the Rivelin Valley and the "Cutting Edge" water sculpture.

The Nature of Things

Our new Exhibition (open until August 28th) focuses on expressions of the natural world using wood, metal, slate, glass and ceramics.

The wonderfully ornate agate gate (not a misprint!) by award winning blacksmith Bob Oakes is possibly one of the largest works we have exhibited, the simple ceramic and glass lilies by Stephanie Jones in the cabinet close by, are amongst the most delicate.

Also on show there are bold floral canvases by John Lincoln, ceramic sea creatures by Liz Roberts, glass by Adele Billinghay, organic wooden bowls from Terry Hooley and a unique beechwood coffee table and shelf created by Finbarr Lucas and Wilf Jones.

“Pursed up and Fangled”

Bags for Shakespeare’s Heroines and other female characters

The delightful title for this joint exhibition comes directly from two Shakespearian plays –

Enobarbus, commenting on Cleopatra’s beauty to his fellow officers, says that she “Pursed up” Anthony’s heart on the river of Cydnus…

“Fangled” is a word meaning love of “finery”, which is used by Posthumus Leonatus in “Cymbeline” when he describes how the world loves fashionable garments- thus in present day parlance, not much change there then!

A collaboration between Textile Artists Jenny Head and

Ann Rogers,
the work showcases a wide variety of techniques including machine embroidery, hand stitching, felting, lacework and elaborate embellishment, which are then translated into wearable textiles, bags, cushions and fans.

The inspiration for this unusual collection stems from a love of literature- and a favourite saying amongst Welsh women on hearing of the treatment of their sisters by an offending male – “Why diden’ you ‘ittim with you-er ambarg then?” thus giving rise to the question, which of Shakespeare’s heroines may have followed this most commendable course of action...?

The Exhibition is open till July 17th, 10am – 5pm daily

Gallery News

The University of the Third Age (U3A) Art Appreciation Group will be attending a special session at Harding House Gallery in May, for a talk by gallery member Helen Neale entitled An Introduction to Art & Craft Appreciation.

The Gallery welcomes enquiries from small groups (no more than 12) who may be interested in similar events featuring other areas of expertise within the group.

Helen will also be holding 2 workshops at the London Road Gallery, London Road, Sheffield -

16th June - Indigo Dyeing
